MOLINE, IL – Marcia Jean Carter, a Western Illinois University professor, was inducted into the Academy of Leisure Sciences (ALS) in early November. Carter has been a member of the recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA) faculty at the WIU-Quad Cities campus (WIU-QC) since 2006.

Carter's expertise lies in recreation, therapeutic recreation, credentialing, program management, curriculum and professional standards. She is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) and a certified park and recreation professional through the National Certification Board (NCB).

As a scholar, Carter holds multiple degrees in the study of recreation. She received her Re.D. from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) in 1976; M.S. in recreation from Indiana State University (Terre Haute, IN) in 1969; and B.A. in health, physical education, recreation, secondary education from Hanover College (Hanover, IN) in 1968.

As a WIU-QC faculty member, Carter has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses. These included upper and lower division, general honors and internship courses. Beyond her professional duties at Western, Carter has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles. She has also co-authored more than 10 books since 1985, her most recent being, "Therapeutic Recreation: A Practical Approach."

"Dr. Carter's breadth of experience in the field, her writing that has shaped therapeutic recreation internationally and her leadership with national certification and accreditation, make her an outstanding member of the WIU community for students and faculty," said Dale Adkins, chair of RPTA at WIU.

Induction into ALS is based on time contributed to the leisure industry, advancements made to the study of leisure and the ability to participate in the academy and advance the academy to new heights. According to the ALS website, "Since its origin in Athens in 386 B.C., the Academy has signified a place of study. But 'Academy' also refers to a group of people dedicated to learning." ALS was officially founded in 1980 in Tempe (AZ) and currently has about 100 members.

Carter was inducted into the academy Nov. 3 in Atlanta (GA) during the academy's business meeting.
