MACOMB, IL – Erskine Smith, associate dean for administration in Western Illinois University's College of Education and Human Services (COEHS), has been appointed to the board of directors for the American Dietetics Association (ADA). In a July 20, 2011, announcement, ADA President Sylvia Escott-Stump noted Smith comes to the ADA Board of Directors "well qualified" and brings to the ADA board the "foodservice system management practice perspective."

"He has more than 30 years of dedicated service to the profession and in ADA and other national, state and local organizations," Escott-Stump noted in her announcement. "[Erskine] was elected to the Commission on Dietetic Registration and served as its chair. He received a Medallion award in 2003 for his service to the ADA in numerous capacities, including membership on the search committee for the editor-in-chief of the Journal; as a member of the nominating committee; and as member and chair of the ADA Foundation Scholarship Committee," she said.

Escott-Stump added that the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) has also recognized Smith's leadership. She noted that at the AAFCS, Erskine served as the President of the Council of Administrators of Family and Consumer Sciences and served on the Executive Board of the American School Food Service Association.

Prior to serving as the associate dean for administration in Western's COEHS, Smith served as the interim dean in the same position (from July 2009); he also previously served as the chair of WIU's dietetics, fashion merchandising and hospitality (DFMH) department. Before coming to Western, Smith served as chair and associate professor of family and consumer sciences at the University of Mississippi. Prior to his faculty and administration positions at "Ole Miss," Smith was the associate director of the division of applied research of the National Food Service Management Institute and an assistant professor of food service management at the University of Southern Mississippi. Smith has also worked as a clinical dietitian in the private sector.

Smith earned his doctoral and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and received his bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He also holds a certificate from The Miami Valley Hospital Dietetic Internship Program.
