Short Story Author Manuel Muñoz Reading March 22 at WIU

MACOMB, IL – Award-winning short story author Manuel Muñoz will give a reading of his work at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22 in the Sherman Hall Auditorium at Western Illinois University. He also will participate in a question and answer session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21 in Simpkins Hall 027. Both events are open free to the public.
Muñoz comes to Western Illinois as the Fred Ewing Case and Lola Austin Case Writer-in Residence. The Case endowment provides student workshops, seminars and readings while offering a nurturing environment for student writers from distinguished national writers of poetry and fiction.
The author of two collections of short stories, Zigzagger (Northwestern University Press, 2003) and The Faith Healer of Olive Avenue (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 2007), which was shortlisted for the 2007 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, Muñoz has a variety of notable awards to his credit. He is a recipient of a 2008 Whiting Writers' Award and served as a juror, with A.M. Homes and Christine Schutt, for the 2011 PEN/O. Henry Awards. He received a 2009 PEN/O. Henry Award for his story, "Tell Him About Brother John."
His work has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Glimmer Train, Epoch, Eleven Eleven and Boston Review, and has aired on National Public Radio's Selected Shorts. Muñoz also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. His first novel, "What You See in the Dark" (Algonquin Books) was published in 2011.
A native of Dinuba, CA, Muñoz graduated from Harvard University and received his MFA in creative writing at Cornell University. He is currently an assistant professor in the University of Arizona's creative writing program.
