As educational administrators and school board members are increasingly embroiled in various controversies such as lawsuits, school discipline and religion in schools, they must keep up-to date with legal issues and policies. That's where the 13th annual Western Illinois University School Law Conference can help. On Friday, March 1 university professors, lawyers, government representatives and school officials will shed insight on issues facing schools. The conference will be held in Horrabin Hall on the WIU Macomb campus.

Brad Colwell, an educational administration and higher education professor from Southern Illinois University, will serve as the keynote speaker. Colwell will present "Help! I've Just Been Sued" from 8:45-9:45 a.m.

The conference will be held from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Sessions will feature such topics as religion in schools, problem employees, contracts, special education, student residency, student discipline, student records/personnel records acts and labor and unemployment.

Illinois guberrnatorial candidate and former CEO of the Chicago Public Schools Paul Vallas will discuss education reform at the noon to 1:15 p.m. luncheon.

“This conference offers insight into current policies and laws and serves as a support system for administrators, teachers and attorneys. We have all levels of expertise here and we have some cutting-edge topics,” Max Pierson, WIU educational administration and supervision department chair and conference coordinator, said.

Sponsors of the 13th Annual School Law Conference include Western’s department of educational administration and supervision, the College of Education and Human Services at WIU and Robert Baumann, regional superintendent of Hancock and McDonough county schools.
