MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- The Western Illinois University College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has announced that beginning in Fall 2012, English will become an official major at the WIU-Quad Cities campus.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our students," said College of Arts and Sciences Dean Susan Martinelli-Fernandez. "The college greatly appreciates the leadership that the Department of English and Journalism has been providing in our Quad Cities initiatives."
According to Mark Mossman, professor of English and chair of the English and journalism department, the major will prepare graduates to perform successfully in a variety of professional settings, as well as in advanced graduate and professional schools. The department currently offers courses in literature, drama and film at WIU-QC.

"These courses fulfill the humanities and multicultural studies requirements; a minor [and now a major] in English; a minor in Professional Writing; and electives in advanced writing and creative writing," Mossman added. "The department also is a significant contributor to the Bachelor of Liberal Arts & Sciences at WIU-QC, so it was a natural to beginning offering English as a major at that campus."

The undergraduate English courses to be taught at the WIU-QC campus in Fall 2012 include English 200: Introduction to Poetry, English 299: Critical Methods of Reading and Writing, English 380: Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences, English 387: Writing Workshop: Non-Fiction and English 480G: Computers and Writing.

The new major is another element in the continued expansion of the WIU-QC campus, noted Joe Rives, vice president for the Quad Cities campus, planning and technology.

"We are pleased to add new academic programs at WIU-QC and to expand educational opportunities that meet our students' and the region's needs," said Rives.
