MOLINE, IL – A Western Illinois University faculty member will tackle the topic of moral education in a presentation in late April in Moline. Yuki Hasebe, associate professor in the WIU Department of Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies, will present, "Psychology and Religion: From the Aspects of Morality," at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 26 at the WIU-QC Riverfront campus, room 104 (A).

The 90-minute presentation is a faculty workshop hosted by Western's Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR). It is also open free to the public, but WIU faculty and staff are encouraged to register via the CITR website at www.wiu.edu/CITR/workshops/?action=showWS&id=1109.

In the workshop description, Hasebe notes, "the major weakness in current moral education and the related debates and practices in society derives from the ambiguity in the definition of the terms morality and fairness."

Hasebe's presentation will highlight the empirical data and theory that conceptually differentiates the notion of morality (i.e., interpersonal fairness and social justice) from social conventions (e.g., social regulations and virtues such as honesty and niceness), she said.

"The data derives from the domain theory of social and cognitive development originally created by Elliot Turiel, a former student and a colleague of Lawrence Kohlberg and currently professor of human cognition at the University of California, Berkeley and co-director of the Institute of Human Development," the workshop description states.

According to Hasebe, the presentation will extend to the discussion of psychology, religion and spirituality, as well as the practices of churches that have long been separated from one another, with an additional reference to the idea of the fourth dimension by Lisa Randall, an American physicist.
