MACOMB, IL - - Students, teachers and individuals who enjoy history and current events are welcome to attend the 27th annual History Conference, "History: Now When We Need It The Most," Saturday, April 27 at Western Illinois University.

A keynote address, "Beyond Black Hawk: Rethinking the Native History of Illinois," will be presented at 1:45 p.m. by Frederick Hoxie, the Swanlund Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"The WIU history department, College of Arts and Sciences and School of Extended and Continuing Education have developed a program series that will address an array of subjects that cover the broad spectrum of human historical experiences," said Larry Balsamo, history department chair and conference coordinator.

"As we progress into a new century, interest in history and our continued recognition of society's need to better understand history seems more important than ever. With the events of last September, now more than ever a better and deeper understanding and appreciation of history will serve us well," Balsamo added.

Registration will be held from 8-9 a.m. April 27 in the Stipes Hall elevator lobby. Conference participants may choose from four presentations to be given by WIU history faculty and guest speakers in three sessions scheduled at 9 a.m., 10:10 a.m. and 11:20 a.m.

Each participant will receive a conference packet containing handouts from all 12 presentations, bibliographies and suggestions for further study. A luncheon is scheduled for 12:45 p.m., followed by the 1:45 p.m. keynote address by Hoxie, an American historian who specializes in Native American history.

Conference fees are $50 for professionals, including the luncheon; and $20 for students, with the luncheon, or $8 for students, without the luncheon. Registration closes Friday, April 19.
