About the Leland Essay Contest
The Leland Essay Contest was established by Bruce H. Leland during the 2002-2003 academic year to recognize the best writers in the Western Writing Program. All students in ENG 100, 180, and 280 as well as GH 101 are eligible to enter one essay per (successfully completed) course. Students may also submit a multimodal writing project. Each course level winner is published online in Western Voices and receives a monetary prize: $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place.
Submissions are currently open for the Leland Essay Contest. Submissions for the 2022 contest will close on Friday, January 27, 2023. Find more submission requirements on the WIU Leland Essay Contest web page.
