  • The number of scholarships are dependent upon the number and quality of applications received.
  • Scholarship amounts vary based on available funds.
  • Recipients are selected by the Psychology Department faculty and chairperson on the basis of the application criteria and supporting material.

Alphons J. Richert Scholarship in Psychology Clinical/Community Mental Health Program

  • Award: Amount of award will be at least $1,000 annually and will be applied to the recipient's student account, divided between fall and spring semesters. Renewable and may be awarded during recipient's internship year.
  • Criteria: Student must be accepted to the Western Illinois University School of Graduate Studies and be enrolled in the Psychology Clinical/Community Mental Health Program.

The Bettye D. Thompson Scholarship in Aging Studies

  • Award: Award of $500 divided equally between fall and spring semesters. Renewable. The student must apply each year in order to be considered.
  • Criteria: Declared minor in Aging Studies; at least a sophomore; U.S. citizen; cumulative and minor GPA of 3.0; completed at least 9 s.h. of the following:
    • AGE 202 - The Aging Person in the Social Context
    • Psychology 423G - Psychology of Adulthood and Aging
    • Sociology 405 - Sociology of Aging in Rural and Urban American
    • or three (3) s.h. from the approved list of electives
  • Application: 1) a letter indicating their interest and career plans in gerontology 2) scholarship application 3) official transcript showing their declared major and minor

Donald J. Poindexter Award

  • Award: Award amount will vary depending on annual endowment interest earnings. Renewable. The student must apply each year in order to be considered.
  • Criteria:
    • First Preference to: Currently enrolled WIU student who is a graduate from Peoria Manual High School, Minimum 3.3 GPA, Graduate in upper 25% of high school class, Psychology major, Ethnic minority, U.S. Citizen
    • Second Preference to: Entering freshman who graduated from Peoria Manual High School, Minimum 3.3 GPA, Minimum of 30 semester hours completed at WIU, Extracurricular involvement, Psychology major, Ethnic minority, U.S. Citizen
    • Third Preference to: Currently enrolled WIU student, Minimum 3.3 GPA, Minimum of 30 semester hours completed at WIU, Involvement in an independent research project (ongoing or just completed) is preferred, Extracurricular involvement, Psychology major, Ethnic minority, U.S. Citizen
  • Application: Letters of recommendation may be requested if there are multiple candidates.

Eric Ward Teaching Assistants Fund

  • Award: Assistantships will carry a stipend and require approximately eight hours of work per week for the 16 week semester. The number of awards will depend on the availability of funds and payments will be made through Payroll. Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Student must excel in statistics and serve/have served as an assistant in helping other students learn statistics.
  • Application: Student(s) are nominated by Psychology faculty.

Fagan-Wise School Psychology

  • Award: Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Students with expressed interest in, or majoring in a school psychology related discipline. Demonstrated desire to graduate and contribute to said career field.

Frank Fulkerson Transfer Scholarship

  • Award: Award amount will be divided equally between Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Criteria: New transfer student, majoring in Psychology and in good academic standing with at least 24 transfer semester hours. Preference will be given to the student with the highest transfer GPA and demonstrated financial need.
  • Application: All new transfer students majoring in Psychology are screened by the department's scholarship committee.

James E. Ackil Research Award

  • Award: At least one student each year (or more than one, depending on availability of funds) will be selected to receive a monetary research award of $150 ( or more if funds allow). Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Completed an independent research project in neuroscience. Research carried out in order to assist someone else with his or her project does not qualify. Undergraduate or graduate class level, with priority to undergraduate students.
  • Application: Students must be nominated by a faculty member of the Department of Psychology. Nominated students will need to submit a face sheet and 400-word abstract with a copy of the completed project.

James Joyce Scholarship

  • Award: Award is usually $100 and given in one semester. The department determines the award amount. Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Psychology major. Demonstrate superior scholarly and professional performance at WIU.
  • Application: The Department of Psychology screens all majors as well as requesting nominations from department faculty.

Lori Lynne Myers School Psychology Scholarship

  • Award: Advertised award amount will be determined each year based on the annual interest earnings on the endowment. Award will be applied to the student's university account ½ fall and ½ spring. Failure of the student to remain in good academic standing or to make satisfactory progress toward a degree may result in withdrawal of the scholarship. Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Graduate students in the Department of Psychology; Completed first year of training; Demonstrates a strong commitment to the profession of school psychology, high standards of professional behavior, and outstanding academic achievements in coursework and practica.
  • Application: Recipient will be selected by a scholarship committee consisting of the Chair, Department of Psychology, two School Psychology faculty members and one graduate of the School Psychology program who is working as a school psychologist.

Mila R. Allen Showers Scholarship

  • Award: Award amount varies based on funding. The award will be applied to the student's university account ½ fall and ½ spring. Renewable, but the student must be nominated and be considered with nomination pool.
  • Criteria: First preference to a senior with a minor in Aging Studies; Second preference to a senior Psychology student performing Aging Studies research; Third preference to a senior or graduate student majoring in Psychology; Minimum 3.0 WIU cumulative GPA.
  • Application: Student is nominated by a Department of Psychology faculty member and presented to the Gerontology Scholarship Selection Committee.

Department of Psychology Outstanding Junior Award

  • Award: Funds awarded at the discretion of the department. Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Must be enrolled as a junior at WIU; Declared major in Psychology; Demonstrate outstanding academic performance and/or activities within the Department of Psychology.
  • Application: Recipient is chosen by the Department of Psychology Scholarship Committee.

Department of Psychology Scholar

  • Award: Funds awarded at the discretion of the department. Not renewable.
  • Criteria: Major in Psychology; Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates outstanding contributions to the field of psychology.
  • Application: Recipient is chosen by the Department of Psychology Scholarship Committee.
