Outreach

Western Illinois Mass Spec Center is engaged to many events in attracting students into the  B.S. Forensic Chemistry B.S. Chemistry  and  B.S. Biochemistry  programs at Western Illinois University (WIU) through a quick and fun demonstration “Detection of the date rape drug GHB in bottled water by FIA-ESI/MS.” Some of such events at WIU are listed in the following.

  • The Department of Chemistry  " Hands-on High School Lab Activities " gives students in regional high schools the opportunity to experience college laboratory experiments in scientific areas of forensic chemistry and chemistry.
  • The CAS (College of Arts and Sciences) summer camp program " Discovering the World Through Science " hosts high school students for one week to conduct hands-on scientific experiments.
  • The CAS “ College Day ” hosts high school students and their families for a day so that they can experience lectures and demonstration, connect with faculty and become familiar with their research.
  • The monthly “ Discover Western ” event serves as a student recruitment vehicle by hosting prospective students and their family members, which include a tour to the research and teaching facilities.
  • The " Explore WIU " event gives students in regional high schools the opportunity to experience WIU's academic programs in interactive, fun and hands-on activities.
  • The  WIS  (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) “ Girl Scout STEM program ” hosts Girl Scouts from kindergartens to high school seniors so that they develop an interest in STEM disciplines.
