Sonja Schmidt

Sonja is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She obtained her Bachelors in Psychology at Purdue University and her Masters in Clinical Social Work at Michigan State University. She worked primarily in the mental health field for 12 years. Sonja was the mental health clinical supervisor at the Community Mental Health Center in Macomb prior to working at WIU. Then, for approximately 13 years, Sonja worked as a counselor at WIU's Alcohol and Other Drug Resource Center. About 2 years ago, she expanded to include working in the mental health arena again. She is active on the Social Work Field Education Committee and the Social Work Advisory Board. Sonja has been involved in numerous other committees over her years at WIU. She has supervised Social Work practicum students since 2009 and enjoys helping students enter into the field of clinical social work. The issue of social justice is extremely important to her and she strives to emulate that in her work on campus and with her clients.

Sonja approaches clients from a Humanistic and strength-based perspective. She utilizes components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy. Most importantly, Sonja believes in a client's right to self-determination and accepting clients where they are. She is also sensitive to issues of diversity in the student population.

Sonja enjoys spending free time with her friends and family. She has a love for all animals and being in nature. She has hiked the Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon twice and loves being outdoors. Sonja also enjoys gardening, baking, reading and wasting time watching Netflix.
