Lorenzen: University Libraries Dean

MACOMB, IL -- Michael Lorenzen, associate dean for public services at Western Washington University (WWU), has been named dean of University Libraries at Western Illinois University, effective July 15. He replaces Phyllis Self who retired April 30 after seven years of service at WIU.

Lorenzen has served as associate dean for public services at WWU since April 2011. Previously, he was the assistant dean for public services and an associate professor at WWU from April 2010 to March 2011. Lorenzen has also served as the head of reference services for the Charles V. Park Library at Central Michigan University (2003-2010); as a library instruction coordinator at Michigan State University (1996-2003); and as a reference librarian at Ohio University at Zanesville (1994-1996). He has served as an adjunct instructor for the School of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University since 2008.

"Dr. Lorenzen comes to Western with an excellent background in the library science," said WIU Provost and Academic Vice President Ken Hawkinson. "His expertise will continue to move University Libraries forward and build upon the outstanding efforts of former Dean Phyllis Self."

Lorenzen earned an Ed.D. from Central Michigan University and an educational specialist degree from Michigan State University. He obtained a master's of education (higher education) from Ohio University and a master's of library science from Kent State University. He earned his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University.
