Moms' Weekend at WIU March 27-29

MACOMB, IL – A wide variety of activities are planned as Western Illinois University's 2015 Moms' Weekend runs from Friday-Sunday, March 27-29.

Registration can be completed at student.services.wiu.edu/sac/weekend/. This year's schedule of events includes:

Friday, March 27

Shower Them with Roses: Lion's Club Fundraiser – Moms can order their student a dozen wrapped roses. Student's living in campus residence buildings with have the wrapped roses delivered to the front desk of the building they live in. Off campus students will pick them up at the registration table.

Tour the Art Gallery - 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Visit the University Art Gallery just north of Sherman Hall. Enjoy an informal tour of prints and drawings in the University Art Gallery collection. Rembrandt van Rijn, Albrecht Durer and Robert Rauschenberg are just a few of the highlights.

Check-in and registration table: University Union, Grand Ballroom Gallery, first floor - noon-6 p.m. Register or pick up registration materials.

Open Recreation: Spencer Student Recreation Center - 5:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Moms admitted free with wristband.

Leatherneck vs. North Dakota State: Boyer Baseball Field - 3 p.m. Free admission to WIU Leatherneck baseball.

Dinner check-in and registration table: University Union, Grand Ballroom Gallery - 6:20-6:30 p.m. Register or pick up your registration material.

Moms' dinner reception and parents night out comedy show: University Union, Grand Ballroom, 6:30 p.m. Meal selections are encrusted tilapia with mango salsa, served with caramelized onion mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus or roasted chicken Florentine, served with oven roasted herb new potatoes and green beans. Entrée selections are accompanied by dinner salads, dessert, rolls and coffee or tea. Advance reservations and payment required. Cash bar from 6:15-8:15 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. Casual attire preferred. Comedy show begins at 8 p.m.

Vocal Recital: COFAC Recital Hall - 7:30 p.m. Angie Sullivan with Allison Huntley - free public performance.

Parents night out comedy show (show only): University Union, Grand Ballroom – 8 p.m. Tickets are available for guests through bcabringsthestars.com for $15 per guest. WIU students need to reserve their ticket for the show through the Moms' Weekend reservation system; both student and guest tickets will then be available to pick up at Moms' Weekend registration. Last year the show sold out, so if you buy a ticket as a guest, make sure you reserve your student tickets through the Moms' Weekend reservation site.

Saturday, March 28

6th Annual Donna Phillips Memorial 5K Fun Run/Dog Walk: Brophy Hall, east entrance - 8:30 a.m., $25 per racer. All pre-registered individuals will receive a race day t-shirt and gift. Late and day of event registrants will receive a gift. Prizes will be given to winners in different categories for both the fun run and dog walk/run. Proceeds will benefit the WIU Department of Kinesiology and its student organizations. Race packet registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in Brophy gymnasium. Fun run begins at 9 a.m.; dog run begins at 9:35 a.m.; and dog walk begins at 9:40 a.m. For more information, visit wiu.edu/donnaphillipsrun.

Cooking breakfast class: 230 Knoblauch Hall – 9-10:15 a.m. Advance registration and payment required.

Moms' Weekend Check-In: University Union, Grand Ballroom Gallery 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Register or pick up a registration packet.

Open Recreation: Spencer Student Recreation Center – 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Moms admitted free with wristband.

Cooking lunch class: 230 Knoblauch Hall – 10:30 a.m.-noon - Advance registration and payment required.

The Leatherneck Art, Craft and Vendor Show: University Union, Heritage Room and Gallery - 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Items for moms and students to browse or purchase. Vendors will be selling art, ceramics, woodwork, jewelry, crafts, purses, candles and more.

Moms' Weekend DIY Workshop: Knoblauch Hall 203 - 10:30-noon - Join the Visual and Apparel Merchandising Organization (VAMO) for fun and creative style activities during Moms' Weekend. They will host style activities and DIY fashion projects, perfect for moms and college students. Supplies will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. A $10 fee will be collected on site.

Moms' Rocky Weekend Workout: Spencer Recreation Center, Fitness Studio East
Saturday, noon-12:50 p.m.

Leatherneck vs. North Dakota State: Boyer Baseball Field - Noon. Free admission to WIU Leatherneck baseball.

Cooking lunch class: 230 Knoblauch Hall - 12:15-1:45 p.m. Advance registration and payment required.

Art Workshop - Paper Garlands: University Art Gallery - 12:30-2 p.m. In this workshop participants will celebrate mother-student relationships by creating colorful and playful paper garlands with messages of love and friendship. This is a free activity and taught by Rhonda Lydeard.

Abs what Abs? Let's find them again: Spencer Recreation Center, Fitness Studio East
Saturday, 1-1:30 p.m. Thirty minute class.

High Ropes Course Experience: Horn Field Campus - 1-4 p.m. Fee is $15 per person and moms climb free. Payment is collected on site on a first come, first served basis. All equipment and training is provided. You must be 18 years old or accompanied by an adult. Sponsored by RPTA and Horn Field Campus.

Cupcake Battles: 230 Knoblauch Hall - Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sweet cupcake battle. Participants are required to pre-register. Participants will provide their own baking supplies to make 24 cupcakes. Baking will occur in Knoblauch Hall kitchen, where kitchen supplies are ample. Each team will have one and half hours to prepare two dozen cupcakes fully decorated for judging. Eighteen cupcakes are submitted to the contest. Each contestant can keep six of their own or swap with the other contestants. Sampling will be available at 4 p.m. for a nominal cost, and viewing is encouraged.

Veterans Club Baggo Tournament: Student Recreation Center - 3 p.m. until tournament is completed. Help the WIU Veterans Club support the Peoria Honor Flight by participating in the Veterans Baggo Tournament. Fee is $10 per team. The Veterans Club will provide snacks and beverages, as well as prizes for first through third place. Support the troops t-shirts will be for sale at the tournament.

Cupcake Tasting: 230 Knoblauch Hall - 4-5 p.m. Tickets are pre-sold on the reservation site, and remaining tickets may be sold at the door. One ticket will provide four quartered samples or one cupcake.

Big Pink Volleyball Challenge: Spencer Student Recreation Center - 7 p.m. Big Pink Volleyball teams will be put together by the recreation center and require moms to participate. Free event, but registration is required.

BINGO: University Union, University Room – 8 p.m. Sponsored by University Union Board.

Sunday, March 29

Eighteen holes of golf: Harry Mussatto Golf Course – 8 a.m.-dusk. Parent fee is $28 and student fee is $24. Internet coupon special and tee time must be scheduled in advance by calling (309) 298-3676.

Moms' Farewell Lunch: University Union, Grand Ballroom - 11 a.m. Soup and Salad Bar Buffet. Join us at a casual lunch to end your weekend experience with your student. Build your own salad, with grilled chicken, bacon crumbles, tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, eggs, cheeses, croutons, etc., and enjoy a bowl of either cream of potato or tortilla soup. Advance reservations and payment required.

Leatherneck vs. North Dakota State: Boyer Baseball Field, Noon.

Open Recreation: Spencer Student Recreation Center – noon-11 p.m. Moms admitted free with wristband.

Student Recital: COFAC Recital Hall – noon. Rachel Levison, clarinet, and Matthew Goulding, oboe. Open free to the public.

Open Swim and Sauna: Spencer Student Recreation Center – 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Swim laps, relax on an inner tube, enjoy the whirlpool, or try the sauna. Aquatic equipment available.

Graduate Recital: COFAC Recital Hall – 2 p.m. Graduate student Nina Blaszka will play the oboe. Open free to the public.

Student Vocal Recital: COFAC Recital Hall, 4 p.m. Hannah Porter and James Flaherty will perform their vocal recital. Open free to the public.

Open All Weekend

Western Illinois Museum: Friday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Convention Bureau, south of the square.

Argyle State Park - six miles west of Macomb, U.S. Route 136
Fish, picnic, camp, and enjoy the wilderness. Rent a rowboat, canoe or paddle boat.

Spring Lake - North of Macomb, off U.S. Route 67 - Hike, fish, picnic, camp, or rent a rowboat or canoe.

Everly Park - Randolph Street, Macomb - Beautiful park with scenic picnic areas.
