MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University alumnus Will Buss has been named the director of student publications.

Buss, a 1997 graduate with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in broadcasting, began his new position Jan. 11. He received his master's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

Prior to coming to Western, Buss was a reporter for the Belleville News Democrat, an adjunct communication instructor at Lindenwood University (Belleville) and an adjunct English and journalism instructor at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville.

Previously, he was also an adjunct mass communication instructor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (2009) and was a reporter for the Kewanee Star Courier (1998-2000). He also served as a sports writer stringer for USA Today Online (1996-1997).

"We are excited Will Buss will be working with the Western Courier staff," said Ronald Williams, interim vice president for student services at WIU. "He is familiar with the best practices of journalism and newspaper business etiquette. Additionally, as an alumnus of the journalism program at WIU, he knows the history and tradition of the Courier, and the important role that it plays at Western Illinois University."

As the director of student publications, Buss serves as the adviser for the Western Courier; teaches courses in broadcasting and journalism; and provides support for student staff members of the Courier's print and online editions. The director is responsible for maintaining news/editorial operation of high journalistic standards; assisting student editors in recruiting, hiring and supervision of news/editorial staff; and for performing routine administrative functions in the Student Publications area.
