WIU Professor to Make Return Appearance at Carnegie Hall

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Assistant Professor of Music Penelope Shumate will make a return appearance to New York City's Carnegie Hall in February to perform the Mozart "Requiem," as well as the NYC premiere of Paul Mealor's "Stabat Mater," presented by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY).

For her Carnegie Hall debut, she performed as a soloist in "Carmina Burana," a work that also marked her return engagements. Additional soloist appearances at this historic venue have included performances in "Messiah," "St. Nicolai Mass," "Coronation Mass" and the Verdi "Requiem."

Recently, she was also recognized by The American Prize in their 2015 Vocal Competition for "Excellence in the Performance of Oratorio" for her appearance in "Messiah" last year, also with DCINY, at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.

Shumate's upcoming soloist debuts include performances with the Heartland Festival Orchestra in Illinois ("Carmina Burana"), The Virginia Consort in Virginia ("Requiem"/Rutter) and the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra in Virginia in Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9," a work that also marks her return engagement with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana.

Shumate has appeared with opera companies and orchestras across America, including the Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Roanoke, Lake George Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, Berkshire Choral Festival, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association, Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, among others.

She is an award winner with the Gerda Lissner Foundation, Marie E. Crump Vocal Arts Competition, MacAllister Awards, New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Vocal Competition, Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, Kennett Symphony Orchestra Vocal Competition and the Altamura/Caruso International Vocal Competition, among others.
