WIU and IEA Sponsor Screening of Documentary Aimed to Help Traumatized Youth

MACOMB, IL — Educators, parents and community members are invited to attend a screening of "Paper Tigers," a documentary that provides an intimate look into the lives of students at Lincoln High School in Walla Walla (WA), an alternative school that specializes in educating traumatized youth. The screening event—set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 22 at Macomb High School's Fellheimer Auditorium—is sponsored by the Western Illinois University Department of Educational Studies and WIU Expanding Cultural Diversity Project, along with the Illinois Education Association (IEA), IEA Region 12 and the Macomb Education Association.

The film examines Trauma Informed Communities, a movement "that shows great promise" in healing youth struggling with the dark legacy of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and chronic "toxic" stress. The event will provide a forum for attendees to discuss the effects of this type of stress on students and how the community can come together to help improves students' lives.

Educators, medical professionals and community members will participate in a panel discussion after the documentary screening to discuss local experiences and solutions to helping students. The schedule for "Paper Tigers" documentary screening event is as follows:

  • 5:30 p.m. doors open
  • 6 p.m. "Paper Tigers" screening
  • 8 p.m. panel discussion
