MACOMB, IL -- Brenna Smith, a Western Illinois University senior communication and economics double major from Evergreen Park (IL) and member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority at WIU, received second place in the National Character Counts! Week essay contest, sponsored by national Tri Sigma organization. Smith was the only Illinois student selected in the top three. First and third place winners were from South Dakota and Michigan, respectively.

"I am delighted to announce the winners of our character essay contest," said Chris Smithhisler, assistant vice president of education and training for Tri Sigma. "Among the dozens of essays we received from collegiate women and Tri Sigma alumnae across the globe, our top winners stood out for their authentic grasp of compassion and understanding of how it will change our world."

Smith is president of WIU's Beta Epsilon chapter, serves as a peer mentor in the University's First Year Experience program and is the vice president of Rho Lambda Honor Society. She has also served as the chief of staff for the Student Government Association and as a recruitment counselor for formal recruitment.

Smith earned $500 for the second place finish. The essays were judged on topic (content supporting theme); impression upon the reader; and form (grammar, spelling, expression of ideas, etc.). Smith's essay can be found at https://www.trisigma.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Brenna_Smith.pdf.
