Dear University Community:

The Macomb Police Department is currently investigating several incidents that recently occurred in which properties near campus, including the residences of some of our Greek student organizations, were vandalized with profane, as well as politically-motivated, graffiti. Even though these destructive acts took place off campus, they affected members of our University community. As president of Western Illinois University, I wish to address this disgraceful behavior and to remind our University community of behavioral expectations and civility.

Destructive acts such as these, particularly when the messages associated with the vandalism target a particular group or allude to violent acts, not only tarnish the reputation of our University and our community, but they also can create a sense of unease. These actions will not be tolerated, and if those found responsible are WIU students, they will be subject to the judicial process review under the Code of Student Conduct and could face possible dismissal from the University.

As I have previously stated, it is our expectation that all members of the University and local communities, and that guests and visitors to WIU and Macomb, behave in a civil and respectful manner.

Building upon the message of civility and respect, I would like to turn your attention to the upcoming election and the days following. We value differing opinions, and we embrace the fact that we live in a country where we are free to express our beliefs and our values. We are fortunate to be able to take part in a democratic process, without fear of intimidation or reprisal. Our differing views and our individuality are what make our University, our region, our state, and our nation a wonderful place to live, learn, and work.

Whether your candidate wins or loses, whether or not you agree with your friends, classmates, and colleagues on political and civil issues, it is our expectation that every individual within our University community, and beyond, be treated with civility and respect. Discourse and discussion are encouraged, and differing points of view help us to learn from one another. However, we will not tolerate acts of hate, racism, violence, and unrest because of an election, a national event, or an international occurrence.

We must work together to encourage a respectful, civil, supportive, and peaceful community. Above all else, be kind to one another.

Sincerely,

Jack Thomas
President
Western Illinois University
