WIU Broadcasting Students Win Award for Best Newscast in the Nation

MACOMB, IL – The student-produced television newscast, "Live at Four," was named the top newscast in the nation during the 77th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System's (IBS) awards Saturday, March 4 in New York, NY.

The nation's top award went to the 30-minute live production that aired Nov. 17, 2016 when students reported live from Canton, IL, one day after a major gas explosion downtown.

NEWS3 students Emily Manley, a senior broadcasting major from Highland, IL; Megan Sanchez, a senior broadcasting major from Bettendorf, IA; Dan White, a senior broadcasting major from La Grange Highlands, IL; and Cora English, a senior broadcasting major from Bushnell, IL, led news staff in the production and execution of the newscast.

Also receiving finalist awards at this weekend's event were:

• Best News Report: Manley

• Best Sports Program: Danny Frey and the WIU Coach's Show – Frye is a junior broadcasting major from Springfield, IL

• Best Campus News category: Manley for "Remember Shakespeare"

• Best Community News category: Breanna Descourouez, a senior broadcasting major from Moline, IL, for "Celebrating the Life of Silven Yocum"

• Best Show Promo: Emily Kenney, a sophomore broadcasting major from Farmington (IL); Josh Hartsook, a sophomore broadcasting major from Greenfield (IL) and Devin Christmon, a sophomore broadcasting major from Springfield (IL) for "Early Morning Madness"

• Best Sports Talk Program: Ryan Mumma, a junior broadcasting major from Wilmington (IL) for "Man Coverage."
