MACOMB, IL – The University Union at Western Illinois University has announced the launch of fundraising for the Alumni Plaza Project, and the adjoining Mascot Memorial Plaza.

The Alumni Plaza Project will include a brick patio to be placed outside the north entry of the University Union. The Mascot Memorial Plaza, which will pay tribute to WIU's live mascot, Colonel Rock, will be just steps away, on the edge of the Alumni Plaza.

This effort is the kick-off to the 50th anniversary of the University Union, which will continue to host celebratory events throughout the year.

The plaza project will include the full replacement of the brick pavers, currently located in the circular plaza. New, engraved pavers will make way for an opportunity for individuals to leave their legacy as part of the University.

As part of the plaza, the project is selling two sizes of engraved bricks:

• Large bricks are 7 inches by 14 inches and can include four lines of text, up to 25 characters per line for $225

• Small bricks are 4 inches by 8 inches and can include three lines of text, up to 16 characters per line for $100

Construction of the new plaza is expected to begin this summer and the first deadline for brick purchases, for bricks to be installed before Homecoming 2018, is July 1. Following the initial deadline, orders will continue to be taken, but the engraved bricks will not be placed into the plaza until the following summer.

Organizers are encouraging individuals interested in purchasing a brick to remember they can serve as a celebratory piece for a number of purposes, including, but not limited to:

• Commemorating a 2018 graduate (or past graduate)

• Memorialize a treasured individual, campus organization, fraternity or sorority

• Declare devotion to a favorite Leatherneck team

• Ensure a business is displayed among other corporate supporters

• Friends and family of the WIU community can show their support for the University
