MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Office of Study Abroad and Outreach will host Girls Plus Math, a summer program for girls ages 11-13, on the WIU Macomb campus July 15-20.

The program will promote interest in mathematics, a willingness to take risks in analysis and the self-confidence and motivation to persist in problem solving. Participants will explore critical thinking skills, web page creation and computer software, as well as mathematical concepts and equations. For hands-on experience, students will build a tetrahedral kite, explore origami and participate in various games that foster critical thinking skills.

Using the most up-to-date teaching methods, materials and technology, the week-long program seeks demonstrate the relationship of math to many different areas of life, explore math beyond the limitations of the standard curriculum and enhance student self-esteem and problem-solving capabilities.

Participants will also be introduced to Polynomiography computer software, which allows users to create art through mathematical equations.
