MACOMB, IL -- Two Western Illinois University broadcasting students have been recognized by the Broadcast Education Association scholarship committee.

Rebecca Stambaugh, a junior broadcasting major of Chapin, IL, was recently named as a recipient of the Abe Voron Award by the Broadcast Education Association.

Stambaugh will receive a $3,000 scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year and complimentary registration for the Broadcast Education Association annual convention.

The Abe Voron Award is bestowed annually to three students working toward a career in radio who show substantial evidence of superior academic performance and potential to be an outstanding electronic media professional. Stambaugh maintains a 3.9 GPA and has worked at Tri States Public Radio and the student-run radio station at WIU since her freshman year. She's also the secretary for WIU's National Broadcasting Society chapter.

Broadcasting and Journalism faculty member Jasmine Crighton was one of the faculty who recommended Stambaugh for the award.

"Rebecca's work with Tri States and WIUS has taught her far more than classes could about the radio broadcasting industry," said Crighton. "Her devotion to this field made her an ideal candidate for this award."

Devin Brooks, a sophomore from St. Louis, MO, has been recognized as an official alternate winner in the competition and will receive complimentary convention registration for the Broadcast Education Association annual convention.

Brooks is a reporter and anchor for the student-produced newscast, NEWS3. After his freshman year, Devin was selected for a paid professional internship working as a multimedia journalist for NBC affiliate, WGEM, in Quincy, IL.

Both students will be officially recognized during the BEA awards ceremony on April 7 in Las Vegas, NV.

The Broadcast Education Association is the premiere international academic media organization, promoting insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals. BEA administers scholarships annually, to honor broadcasters and the entire electronic media profession.
