Dear Western Illinois University community,

I know that the entire Western Illinois University community is profoundly
saddened by the loss of the astronauts on board the space shuttle Columbia.
This is a tragic event for our country and for the world. Space travel
reflects our human passion for discovery, investigation, and research.

I know that we all want to express our sympathy to the families of those who
perished trying to help us better understand our universe. I hope that we will
all take some time to reflect on the great sacrifices these seven individuals
made.

Sincerely,

Alvin Goldfarb
President
Western Illinois University
