MACOMB/MOLINE, IL -- The Financial Aid Office at Western Illinois University has begun processing award offers for the 2021-22 academic year; one of the earliest dates in Illinois.

Office of Financial Aid Interim Director Bobbi Smith said she knows how complicated and confusing the process of applying for financial aid can be.

"We understand the financial aid process can be stressful for families who are starting to make college selection decisions," Smith said. "That is why we work so hard to get award offers out early, so families have ample opportunity to review and ask questions in order to make informed decisions concerning their financial future."

The 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened Oct. 1, and should be filled out by any student attending college in the 2021-22 academic year. To date, WIU has received more than 7,000 applications.

To receive an award offer from WIU, students who list Western as a school choice (001780) on their FAFSA need to be admitted to the University. Students can apply to WIU online for free during the month of November.

WIU Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Enrollment Services Douglas Freed said the University encourages all students to apply for admission now to receive the fee waiver. After the application is submitted, potential students should submit the financial aid application so they can see how WIU's scholarships and other aid can make college more affordable for them.

The cost of attending college is a critical component in a student's college selection. Upon receipt of students' award offers, families can contact the Office of Financial Aid at (309) 298-2446 to have their questions answered. Financial aid advisers are available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
