Smith Named Student Legal Advocate

MACOMB, IL – After a five-year hiatus, the Office of Student Legal Advocacy at Western Illinois University has returned, with Attorney-at-Law Victoria (Torrey) Smith on staff as WIU's student legal advocate. Her office is located on the first floor of the Union, in the far west hallway across from the Cardinal/Oak Room. Smith previously taught Constitutional Law as an adjunct professor in WIU's Department of Political Science, as well as practiced law at Burton Law Office in Macomb. She also has served as a career clerk in the chambers of Judge John P. Wiese of the United States Court of Federal Claims, in Washington, D.C. and a summer associate with the firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston, MA. Smith was also employed as the associate director of admissions at St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

She received her juris doctorate from Harvard Law School, and her undergraduate degree from Princeton University.

"We are pleased once again to offer our students legal guidance and advocacy. Torrey's law experience, as well as her knowledge of WIU, will provide our students with outstanding counsel," said WIU General Counsel Elizabeth Duvall.

In the community, Smith has served in various volunteer roles at St. Paul School and is a troop leader for the Girl Scouts of America. She has also served on the board of directors for the Performing Arts Society.

Student Legal Advocacy provides a licensed, practicing attorney to students, free of charge, for assistance in navigating the legal system, including offering recommendations and referrals for misdemeanors, traffic violations, landlord/tenant disputes and more.
