Schedule for Women's History Month at WIU

MACOMB, IL -- The Women's Center at Western Illinois University will celebrate Women's History Month 2021 throughout March with a wide variety of events planned.

This year's schedule includes:

Monday, March 8, 6-7 p.m. – "Meet Me at my Intersections; Navigating Spaces as a Black Queer Woman." Keynote speaker Tamika Austin will discuss navigating spaces as a Black, Queer Woman – the address will be virtual at wiu.zoom.us/j/95851078502 and registration can be completed on PurplePost. Tuesday, March 9, 5 p.m. – "Finding Love in Your Own Body," a discussion of body standards and a painting session related to body positivity hosted in the Multicultural Center by Alpha Sigma Tau. For additional information, contact Aleezah Washington at a-washington2@wiu.edu.

Friday, March 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. – Queer Quilting in the Multicultural Center. The LGBT*QA Resource Center and the Women's Center offer an opportunity to learn how to stitch together fabrics and relationships. For additional information, contact Kairo Scott at kj-scott3@wiu.edu.

Saturday, March 13 - Girl Scouts' Birthday Party - Campus Girl Scouts will host a 109th private birthday party for the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois.

Monday, March 15, 5-6 p.m. - Financial Empowerment Workshop – Multicultural Center - Local financial expert Julie Anne Pickett will host a financial workshop sharing her expertise on how to become financially independent. For additional information, contact Washington at a-washington2@wiu.edu.

Tuesday, March 16, 5-7 p.m. – Selena Night at the Multicultural Center - Selena will forever be one of the most famous and beloved women in music. The event will celebrate the singer, performer, legend and much more with fun interactive activities and drawings. For additional information, contact the MCC at mcc@wiu.edu.

Thursday, March 18, 7:45 a.m. – broadcasted on Tri-States Public Radio, 91.3 FM – "Can She Do the Job?" - WIU Women's Center graduate assistants Aleezah Washington and Trameka Pope will be featured in the Tri-States Public Radio local commentary hour discussing gender stereotyping that women face in the workplace. Friday, March 19, 6:30-9 p.m. – Good as Hell Karaoke at the Multicultural Center - An evening of Karaoke, is inspired by Lizzo, a Black singer/songwriter who actively supports body positivity and the LGBTQA+ community. The event is sponsored by the MCC's LGBT*QA Resource Center and Women's Center. For additional information, contact Scott at kj-scott3@wiu.edu.

Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m.-noon – "Women's Retreat: In the Company of Women," a virtual space where women can come together to discuss relationships, self-care, mental wellness and expression. The event is a collaboration between the WIU Multicultural Center, Monmouth College Intercultural Life, Bradley University Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Cornell College Office of Intercultural Life. Wednesday, March 24

- 11 a.m.-1 p.m. – "Wednesday's with the Women's Center: Beautifully Head Wrapped," at the Multicultural Center. The event, sponsored by the MCC's Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and Women's Center, will include the history of headwraps and how to wear them. - 5-6 p.m. – Panel discussion, "Women Intersectionality – Multicultural Center - Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc. will present a panel of women discussing their intersecting identities. For additional information, contact Anthony Gomez at a-gomez6@wiu.edu.

Friday, March 26, 4-6 p.m. – "Woman Talk," at the Multicultural Center – The event will include a discussion by three WIU undergraduate women on subjects that include relationships, the things they wish they knew growing up, self-worth and other self-empowering themes. Join Mireya, Neelum and Tanisha for an evening of woman-to-woman, real talk. For additional information, contact the MCC at mcc@wiu.edu.

Tuesday, March 30, 5 p.m. – "Uncomfortable Truths," a discussion at the Multicultural Center - Gamma Phi Omega Sorority, Incorporated will present a discussion on issues that diverse women face. For additional information, contact the Jackie Damian j-damian@wiu.edu.
