WIU Student-Run Media Wins Three Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Media Awards

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's student-run, broadcast news station, NEWS3, won Best College TV Station, and sports media and NEWS3 won two individual awards on March 6 at the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Media Awards.

"I am incredibly proud of the students when they win awards, but especially during a pandemic, which made producing the news more challenging," said Broadcasting and Journalism Instructor and News Director Jessica M. Martin. "The resiliency of the students in our program is incredible, and I cannot wait to see what they do next."

NEWS3, the student-run television news station, won Best College TV Station overall. Jenna Skarlupka, a senior broadcasting and journalism major, from Freeport, IL and of NEWS3, won Best Use of Graphics for the graphic COVID-19 Status Update, and senior broadcasting and journalism major RJ Larson, of Burlington, WI, won for Best Sports Pre-Game/Post-Game Show for the WIU vs Oral Roberts interview with Women's Basketball Coach JD Gravina.

NEWS3 staffers and broadcast journalism's sports broadcasters were nominated as finalists for a number of categories, including Best College TV Station, Best College Radio Station, Best Sports Pre-Game/Post-Game Show, Best Women's Basketball Play-By-Play, Best Spot News, Best Use of YouTube, Best Video Sports Report and Best Use of Graphics. Individual WIU student nominees include senior broadcasting major Devin Brooks, of St. Louis, MO; Skarlupka, Larson, sport management graduate student David Koier, of Menomonee Falls, WI and senior broadcasting and journalism major Will Beesing, of Byron, IL.
