MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's online anthropology degree program has been named one of the 10 best in the nation by the Best Colleges ranking system.

WIU began offering the online version of its bachelor's degree program in 2018.

"Anthropology is all about the study of patterns," said Anthropology Program Director Heather McIlvaine-Newsad. "Patterns in languages, marriage and kinship, bones and the materials we leave behind. By paying attention to the patterns of higher education around us, the Anthropology program at WIU has reimagined and reconstituted our curriculum so that it is resistant, resilient and adaptive to meet the needs of our current and future students."

WIU ranks tenth in the online rankings, which presents potential students with program quality information.

"The anthropologists don't just talk about how we can live; they teach us by doing," said 2019 anthropology and computer science graduate Lindisty Littell. "That helps me live my way into a new way of thinking and being."

The WIU program offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of human biological and cultural diversity and addresses social and cultural consequences from a global perspective. A degree in anthropology prepares students for excellent jobs and opens doors to various career paths: The course of study provides global information and thinking skills critical to succeeding in the 21st century in business, research, teaching, advocacy and public service. Coursework can be focused on one of four areas: cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology or linguistics.

The online anthropology program provides both live and recorded lectures using Zoom technology, which allows faculty to interact with students during the lecture or at a later time.
