Western Named Interim Chief Human Resource Officer

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Management and Marketing Instructor Bruce Western has been named WIU's interim Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO), effective Sept. 7. Western will continue to teach within his academic department during the interim appointment. A national search will resume in Spring 2022.

Western joined the WIU faculty as an adjunct instructor in 2014. He was named a full-time instructor in 2015. Western teaches courses in human resource management, employment law and employee benefits. Prior to joining the WIU Department of Management and Marketing, he worked in human resources management at McDonough District Hospital from 1991 to 2010. Western also continued to work part-time in the hospital's HR department from 2010 through 2020. He began his HR career in 1989 as the director of human resources and accounting at Eagle Creek Resort and Conference Center.

Western is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and serves as the faculty adviser for the Society of Human Resource Management at WIU. He is also the coordinator of the College of Business and Technology's Professional Development Series.

"We are pleased that Bruce has agreed to serve as the interim Chief Human Resource Officer at WIU. His many years of human resources management experience in the private sector, as well as his academic expertise in subjects related to human resources, will allow us to provide enhanced services and resources for our current and prospective employees at WIU," said Interim Vice President for Finance and Administration Shannon Sutton.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from WIU.

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA), the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) serves as a key partner with University leadership and sets the overall strategic vision for Human Resources. The CHRO has oversight and responsibility for all talent acquisition and development, oversees benefits and labor relations, promotes a highly diverse and high functioning workforce, coordinates development and assimilation of University Human Resource policies and procedures and identifies trends and innovations in all aspects of Human Resources.
