Latinx Heritage Month Celebrated at WIU

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Multicultural Center will celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, Wednesday, Sept. 15-Friday, Oct. 15.

Scheduled events will provide the opportunity to learn more about Latinx history and cultural roots, the importance of building community and empowerment through hardships.

This year's schedule includes:

Wednesday, Sept. 15 – 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Bring Your Own Tortilla – Multicultural Lawn. This event includes free food, music and games.

Thursday, Sept. 18, 2-3 p.m.: Café Y Hablamos – Casa Latina Lounge. This beginner-friendly event will offer space to engage in Spanish conversation regarding family and life experiences.

Friday, Sept. 17, 7-11 p.m.: El Baile: Y El Cuerpo Lo Sabe – Multicultural Center – Sponsored by the Latin American Student Organization and the Tradicion Latin Dance Team.

Monday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m.: King of Latin Pop Party – Multicultural Center. This Ricky Martin-themed karaoke night is co-sponsored by LGBT*QA Resource Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 6 p.m.: Breaking the Ice: Engaging with the Past, Present and Future – Multicultural Center. This event will break down the history of I.C.E., uncovering human rights violations and discussing the future.

Thursday, Sept. 23, 4 p.m.: Pa'rriba, Pa'Bajo, Pa'l Centro, 'Mal Intento?" – Casa Latina Lounge, Multicultural Center; sponsored by AMPLIFY.

Monday, Oct. 4, 4:30-6 p.m.: Masculinity Monday: Machismo Relay – Multicultural Center – co-sponsored by the WIU Women's Center.

Tuesday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m.: Spoken Through My Intersections – Multicultural Center. An Afro-Latinx guest poet share-outs and discussion, which is co-sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center.

Monday, Oct. 11, 5 p.m.: Latindad: Embracing Indigenous Cultures – Multicultural Center. Co-sponsored by Gamma Phi Omega and Alpha Psi Lambda.

Wednesday, Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m.: Letters Home to Hero Street – University Union, Sandburg Theatre - a documentary showing, which is sponsored by the Veteran's Resource Center.

Thursday, Oct. 14, 2-3 p.m.: Café Y Hablamos, Casa Latina Lounge at the Multicultural Center. This beginner-friendly event will offer space to engage in Spanish conversation regarding building community.

Friday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: En La Casa, Casa Latina Cultural Center, free food, music, socializing. This event will feature free food, music and socialzing.

"Casa Latina is excited to get students involved in learning more about Latinx identities, cultures, and social issues within our community," said Casa Latina graduate assistant Meyani Montano. "We have a wide variety of educational, social, and interactive events that we hope you all will enjoy."
