MACOMB, IL -- The Western Illinois University community is saddened to learn of the death of WIU graduate student James Charles Lines II, 48, of Edwards, who died Nov. 15.

Lines was pursuing a doctoral degree in education. He was the special education director at Deer Creek Mackinaw School District No. 701.

"We extend our deepest condolences to James' family, friends, colleagues and students," said WIU President Guiyou Huang.

Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary in Peoria.

"I was honored to know James through his coursework at WIU in the superintendent program and doctoral program," said WIU Education Professor Emerita Lora Wolff. "He provided keen insight to our discussions, especially about special education issues. His passion for special education students was clear and was the topic of his dissertation research. James left us far too soon."

Luz Hernandez, an instructional coach at Willard Elementary School, was was in the doctor program with Lines.

"James was a kind and wise classmate. He was the first person to approach and welcome me into the doctoral program," Hernandez said. "His kind gesture helped me start with a great feeling about my decision for a difficult journey. James was always down to earth with practical advice for me particularly with his area of expertise. Special education lost a great advocate, we lost a friend. My prayers are with his family."

Mike Ruff, principal, Andalusia Elementary School, was also in the doctoral program with Lines.

"James was a fun-loving guy who was easy to work with," Ruff said. "He consistently brought more awareness to the world of special education as an advocate for students who experience learning challenges. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to know him."
