Student Death Reported

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety (OPS) was called to a residence hall at 3:10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 to check on the well-being of a student. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive student. The student was pronounced deceased at 3:33 p.m. by the McDonough County coroner.

According to OPS Director Derek Watts, the death is under investigation by the Office of Public Safety and the McDonough County Coroner's Office; however, no foul play is indicated. A preliminary investigation indicates the individual died by suicide. Notifications are pending.

"We are incredibly saddened by the sudden loss of one of our students. Our University counseling staff members are available for any University community member who wishes assistance," said WIU President Guiyou Huang. "For any student struggling, please know you are not alone. We have people here who will help you."

Students can contact the University Counseling Center at (309) 298-2453. The Counseling Center will be open until 9 p.m. this evening. Individuals may also call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-TALK (8255) or dial 988 from a cellular phone.
