Dear WIU Community,

Fifty-three years ago this June, the Stonewall rebellion took place in New York. In remembrance of this historic event, Pride Month is celebrated nationally each year in June. Our University celebrates Pride Month during the academic year, throughout the month of April, to recognize the impact and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends at WIU and beyond.

At Western, we are committed to fostering an environment of respect, equity and inclusion. We embrace individual uniqueness, we will ensure a safe and secure environment for all members of our University communities and we have vital resources and programs in place, including the LGBT*QA Resource Center, Unity, UCOSOGIE and the Queer Studies minor. More information can be found at wiu.edu/student_services/mcc/lgbtqa/.

The WIU LGBT*QA Resource Center, the Multicultural Center and other University programs and departments have many events scheduled to commemorate Pride Month 2022 at Western. More information about programs scheduled during April can be found at bit.ly/WIUPride2022.

I wish to express my gratitude and appreciation to our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have dedicated themselves to supporting and advocating our LGBTQ+ community, and for all underrepresented members of our WIU family. We will continue to stand up for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and we will uphold our commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Best wishes,

Guiyou Huang, Ph.D.
President
Western Illinois University
