MACOMB, IL – This year's Camp Rocky program, an annual event run by Western Illinois University students, was held April 30 at WIU's Horn Field Campus.

The program was organized and led by students from WIU's Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration's Camp Leadership course.

According to RPTA Assistant Professor Megan Owens, the Camp Rocky students "ran a splendid outdoor day camp with local children in grades 1-4."

"The weather cooperated, and all activities were able to be held outdoors, including the all-time favorite climbing wall," said Owens. "All of the campers brought their competitive spirit for the uniquely-designed Olympic games, and everyone went home with a handmade wooden medal made by one of our Camp Rocky students from a tree in their backyard."

After the games, the 20 campers were treated to campfire pizza pockets and s'mores.

Owens added that the Camp Rocky students were thrilled to work with the campers and help introduce many of them to an outdoor experience at Horn Field Campus. Campers showed excitement for playing together outside and trying new games.

"You should come to this camp because it's really fun, you learn a lot, and all the camp counselors are really nice," said one camper.

The 2022 Camp Rocky event was designed to provide an experience where youth were able to try new activities in a welcoming outdoor space. The camp is also a lesson for WIU students in planning and providing a high-quality youth camp experience.
