Dear WIU Community,

As Black History Month is celebrated across the nation this month, please join us at the many activities and events Western Illinois University is planning to hold to honor and recognize Black History Month.

I hope you will join us in the many events the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center will be hosting throughout the month, including the MLK Week of Service, which honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through a week of volunteering and service, beginning today. A multitude of other events, in collaboration with Western's Casa Latina, Women's Center, LGBTQA Resource Center, and the Office of Student Engagement will be held throughout the month of February and can be found at wiu.edu/news.

Additionally, History Professor Peter Cole will be presenting on the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The recognition and awareness should not, and will not, stop when the month of February is over. We will continue to raise awareness, educate, and promote Black history and culture throughout the entire year.

The Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, the Black Student Association, the National Association of Colored Women's Club, the Black Male Achievement Network, Cultural Expressions, the WIU NAACP Chapter, and more within the WIU Multicultural Center provide numerous ways for Black students to come together at our University. These organizations provide exceptional educational opportunities for our University community, as well as area residents. Thank you for all that you do for Western Illinois University. Your activism and service are greatly appreciated and acknowledged.

Sincerely,

Guiyou Huang, Ph.D.
President
