MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University’s Delta Sigma Pi professional business fraternity will sponsor a blood drive from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3 in the Union Heritage Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.

The blood drive, co-sponsored by the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center – which supplies blood to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, is open to the campus and community. All persons who apply to give blood (including those who are ineligible to donate) will be placed in drawings for prizes donated by local businesses.

Delta Sigma Pi, in conjunction with a consumer behavior class taught by Carolyn Tripp, decided on a blood drive event to tie in with WesternÂ’s civic engagement theme, said Matt Fuhr, the fraternityÂ’s community service chair and a member of TrippÂ’s class.

“When people think about civic engagement, they might think about voting or volunteer opportunities,” Fuhr said. “But giving blood is another form of engagement as this worthwhile activity helps people in need, while getting others involved in a helping activity.”

Individuals interested in donating can contact Fuhr at 309/791-1056 or via e-mail at MW-Fuhr@wiu.edu. Walk-ins will also be accepted.

According to the blood center, the last eligible date to donate is Sept. 8, and those who have received a recent tattoo or piercing must wait one year before donating blood. Donors are also advised to eat at least four hours prior to donating and to bring a form of identification. To check further eligibility guidelines, contact the blood center at 800/474-5401.
