Symphony Orchestra Concerto Winners Concert March 4

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University School of Music will present the WIU Symphony Orchestra Concerto Winners Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall. The program will feature four outstanding student soloists and one composition winner, whose work will be performed by the orchestra.

The program will include “A Replicant Dream,” by Steven Weimer, senior music theory and composition major (St. Charles, IL) and “Overture to Der Freischutz” by Carl Maria von Weber. Soloist Alex Viteri-Jimbo, freshman music major (Ecuador), will be featured on violin in “Zigeunerweisen” by Pablo de Sarasate. Pianist Shoko Tayama, senior music composition major (Saitama, Japan), will play the Allegramente movement from Maurice Ravel’s “Concerto for Piano in G Major.” André Jolivet’s “Concertino for Trumpet, Strings and Piano” will feature graduate student Matthew James Shefcik (Chicago, IL) on trumpet along with faculty pianist Jason Aquila. The evening will conclude with oboe soloist Hillary Brunner, junior music business and oboe performance major (Chadwick, IL), in “Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra” by Eugène Goosens.

Tickets -- $5 for the public and free for WIU students, faculty and staff -- will be available at the door on the night of the performance.
