Jazz Vocalist Curtis Stigers at WIU October 10
October 2, 2006
MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois UniversityÂ’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs (BCA) presents jazz vocalist and saxophonist Curtis Stigers and his trio at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 in the University Union Grand Ballroom.
Stigers heads a new generation of jazz singing style. His latest album released in 2005, “ I Think It’s Going to Rain Today,” includes songs written by some of the most influential and talented songwriters of our time.
“I have a great love and eclectic knowledge of a wide array of songwriters and musical genres, and I know how to bring them all together into one cohesive sound,” Stigers said in his web biography (www. curtisstigers.com). “I sing beautiful love songs, but I’m not really a crooner. I write, but I’m not just a singer-songwriter. I’m certainly a jazz singer but so much more, too.”
StigersÂ’ love of music began as a teenager in Boise, ID, where he received classical training in both clarinet and saxophone and played in punk and blues bands throughout high school.
A move to New York helped launch Stigers into the blues and jazz scenes, where he was signed by Arista after being discovered as the saxophonist/vocalist of a jazz-influenced trio. He released two albums under the label Curtis Stigers (1991) and Time Was (1995).
Stigers has been celebrated for a variety of accomplishments, including world concert tours with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Prince. He has played with such jazz greats as Nancy Wilson, Randy Brecker and Toots Thielmans; and he has also performed his pop hits on the “Tonight Show” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”
Tickets--$15 for the public, $12 for seniors 62 years old and older and WIU employees, $10 for youth age 17 and younger and $5 for WIU students with ID--are available from noon-5 p.m. weekdays at the Browne Hall Hainline Theatre Box Office, telephone 309/298-2900.
