University Singers and Orchestra "Major Works" Concert April 21

MACOMB, IL - - The Western Illinois University Symphony Orchestra, the University Singers and student and guest soloists will combine for the Major Works Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall.

A $5 admission fee for the public will be charged at the door. WIU students with a valid ID will be admitted free. Doors will open at 7:10 p.m.

The Bach concert will be the final concert conducted by Professor Bruce Briney in his five-year tenure as conductor of Western's Symphony Orchestra. Briney will return to his initial teaching assignment in applied trumpet for the WIU School of Music.

Western Symphony Orchestra will perform Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F" and "Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B flat" in the first half of the program. Viola soloists will be Istvan Szabo, assistant music professor, and freshman Ignacio Moreno (Ecuador).

The concert will conclude with "Magnificat in D," featuring the Symphony Orchestra, University Singers and soloists soprano Kitty Karn, assistant professor of musical theatre at Western; mezzo-soprano Kerry Walters, associate professor of music in voice and opera workshop conductor at Bradley University; alto Sarah Holman, associate professor of voice and director of the Opera Music Theatre at Wheaton College; tenor Terry Chasteen, assistant professor of voice at Western; and bass Lynn Thompson, assistant professor of voice and director of the University Opera Theatre at Western.

Orchestra soloists include, by instrument:

Violin 1: Senior Kristin Miller (Lombard, IL), freshman Christine Pappalardo (Naperville, IL) and sophomores Alex Jimbo (Equador) and Ardiana Iseni (Macedonia).

Violin 2: Seniors Lauren Gebauer (Alton, IL) and Jessica Myers (Silvis, IL), sophomore Julienne Soltwisch (Monooka, IL) and Ben Harris, a WIU staff accompanist.

Viola: Graduate student Eszter Szilveszter (Romania), senior Lina Mason, sophomore Victoria Moore (Chicago) and freshmen Ede Kun (Macomb) and Ignacio Moreno (Equador).

Cello: Seniors Juan Carlos Moreno (Evanston, IL) and Delle Peterson (Compton, IL).

Bass: Senior Barzeen Vaziri (N. Aurora, IL) and sophomore Dusty Carlson (Cary, IL).

Harpsichord and Organ: Jason Aquila, Western Illinois staff accompanist.

Oboe: Seniors Hillary Brunner (Chadwick, IL), Kathleen McTaggart (Ottawa, IL) and Jeff Padgett (Dixon, IL).

Bassoon: Freshman Allison Marcum (Joliet, IL).

Horn: Senior John Reem (Macomb) and freshman Amber Deen (Moline, IL).

Trumpet: Graduate student Paul Killinger (Monmouth, IL), senior Nathan Haley (Macomb) and sophomore Neal McFarland (Roselle, IL).

Timpani: Senior Mike Schraft (Lombard, IL).
