MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's Student Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (SCIMA) has been named one of the four outstanding student chapters in the nation by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) in the prestigious Award of Excellence student competition. In addition, SCIMA at Western has won a Best Practices award for its strategic plan.

According to Amy Ford, instructor in WIU's accountancy department, the IMA judged the student chapter on its incorporation of the IMA's mission and vision statements into the chapter's strategic plan and activities, as well as the chapter's use of innovative methods to serve its students and the IMA.

"Our student IMA chapter was led by President Caitlin McCabe (senior, accountancy, St. Charles, IL) this year," Ford said. "Western's chapter submitted a portfolio of activities for the past year, including newsletters, information on its educational and professional meetings, plant tours, community services, website information and participation in the student manuscript competition. Officers in charge of the portfolio were Rebecca Trudeau (senior, accountancy, Frankfort, IL) and Nicole MacLeod (senior, human resource management, Morris, IL)."

SCIMA Secretary Samantha Siemieniec (junior, pre-business conditional accounting, Gardner, IL) and Treasurer Samantha Pherigo (junior, accountancy, Glasford, IL) will join Ford in accepting the awards at the 91st Annual IMA Conference and Exposition in Baltimore (MD) this June. Ford has served as the faculty adviser for WIU's SCIMA for the past four years.

"This year's Outstanding Student Chapter award marks the fifth consecutive year SCIMA at Western has won one of the coveted top spots in the IMA competition," Ford added.

Patricia Lake (Altona, IL), accountancy graduate student, will also be recognized at the conference as a winner of one of the IMA scholarships in the national scholarship competition.

In addition to competing in the chapter competitions, WIU students competed in the IMA Video Case competition. Members of the team were Caitlin McCabe, Samantha Siemieniec, Jessie Lai (senior, accountancy, Hong Kong), Mark Warzecha (senior, accountancy, Chicago, IL) and Scott Perkins (senior, accountancy, Moline, IL).
