MACOMB, IL – "Big box" retailers aren't the only ones offering holiday specials and savings this month.

Connect by Hertz is offering a special December promotion to members of the Western Illinois University-Macomb community who may be interested in joining the car sharing program at the Macomb campus. The WIU Connect by Hertz car sharing program started in January 2010 to provide vehicles to students, faculty and staff, and now, to residents Macomb and surrounding communities, in need of a car for a few hours or even a weekend.

From Dec. 16 to Jan. 17, 2011, members of the WIU-Macomb community can rent any vehicle through Western's program, any time, any day, for $5 an hour. The usual rate for WIU members is $8 an hour to use one of three fuel-efficient vehicles, which include a Toyota Prius, a Toyota Camry and a Mini Cooper. The hourly rates include gas, insurance and maintenance fees. There is a cap of $62 a day for a vehicle.

Two vehicles are parked at the University Services Building, near the Western Illinois Credit Union, while the third vehicle rotates locations throughout campus.

Membership can be completed online at Once approved, members receive a Connect card which is used to unlock the vehicle. Each vehicle is equipped with a GPS system, an iPod adaptor, a Bluetooth connection and 24/7 live service to report problems, extend reservation times and more. Vehicle reservations are also made online, and a credit or debit card is necessary for membership. When the car is returned, Connect by Hertz charges the member's credit or debit card for the costs incurred. The only requirements to become a member are to be 18 years of age and have a good driving record.

The $50 annual fee and a $25 application fee are waived through Dec. 31. Applicants should use the code GOGREEN2010 to take advantage of this promotion.
