VPAS Interviews Update

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Interviews for the vice president of administrative services (VPAS) position at Western Illinois University will continue Tuesday-Wednesday, April 26-27; Thursday-Friday, April 28-29; Monday-Tuesday, May 2-3; and Tuesday-Wednesday, May 3-4. Current VPAS Jackie Thompson will retire June 29 after 41 years of service.
Richard Metz, former vice president for finance and administration at The City College of New York, will interview April 26-27. Open sessions will be held from 9:30-10:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 26 in Room 102AB at the WIU-Quad Cities 60th Street campus and 2-2:50 p.m. Wednesday, April 27 in the University Union Capitol Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Metz was the vice president for finance and administration at The City College of New York from 2007-2010. Prior to that he was the vice president for administration and business affairs from 1995-2007 at California State University (East Bay). He has also served as vice president for administrative services at Frostburg State University (1987-1995); director of auxiliary services at Lehigh University (1979-1987); assistant to the president at Essex Community College (1976-1979); and college center operations manager at Towson State University (1971-1976). He received his master's degree from Johns Hopkins University and his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University.
Karla Mongeon-Stewart, director of change management and process improvement at North Dakota State University (Fargo), will interview April 28-29. Open sessions will be held from 9:30-10:20 a.m. Thursday, April 28 in Room 102AB at the WIU-Quad Cities 60th Street campus and 2-2:50 p.m. Friday, April 29 in the University Union Lincoln Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Mongeon-Stewart has served as the director of change management and process improvement at North Dakota State University since July 2007. She has also served as the interim facilities management director from May-October 2010 and budget director from July 2007-October 2010 at North Dakota. Prior to that she was the director of business and financial operations/controller at Bismarck State College (2003-2007); ERP financial team lead and financial planning and reporting manager (2001-2003) for MDU Resources in Bismarck, ND; director of finance for the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (2000-2001); director of finance for Cedar Valley Hospice, Waterloo, IA (1999-2000); and director of finance/CFO for Lutheran Health Systems (1996-1999). She received her master's degree from the University of Mary (2007) and her bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University (1996).
Gregory Alt, assistant vice president and university comptroller at Illinois State University, will interview May 2-3. Open sessions will be held from 10-10:50 a.m. Monday, May 2 in Room 102AB at the WIU-Quad Cities 60th Street campus and 2-2:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 3 in the University Union Lincoln Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Alt has been the assistant vice president and university comptroller at Illinois State University since 2002. Also at Illinois State he has served as assistant university comptroller (1996-2002) and as assistant director of fiscal management and planning (1990-1996). Prior to joining ISU, he was in the office of planning and budget at the University of Illinois, Urbana (1989-1990); was the director of business affairs at Ozark Christian College (1984-1989); and was a certified public accountant for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in Denver, CO (1981-1984). He received his master's (1994) and bachelor's (1981) degrees from Illinois State.
David Wesse, vice chancellor for finance and administrative services at Louisiana State University (Alexandria) will interview May 3-4. Open sessions will be held from 10-10:50 a.m. Tuesday, May 3 in Room 102AB at the WIU-Quad Cities 60th Street campus and 2-2:50 p.m. Wednesday, May 4 in the University Union Lincoln Room on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Wesse has served as vice chancellor for finance and administrative services at Louisiana State University since 2003. Prior to that he was the assistant vice president for administration and finance at University of North Florida, Jacksonville (2000-2003); the manager of higher education consulting for KPMG Peat Marwick in Dallas, TX (1997-2000); director of general services administration at Northwestern University (1981-1997); administrative manager for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, Oak Brook Terrace, IL (1979-1981); administrative manager of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL (1976-1979); and administrative manager of RH Donnelly Corp. in Chicago (1974-1976). He received his master's degree from Loyola University (1983); his bachelor's degree from Illinois State University (1973); and his associate's degree from South Suburban College, South Holland, IL (1971).
Charles Darnell, director of the WIU Physical Plant, interviewed April 7-8.
Darnell has served as director of Western's Physical Plant since December 2001. Prior to joining WIU, he was the assistant director for utilities at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX from 1997-2001. Also at Texas, he served as manager of energy utilization (1991-1997); as supervisor for engineering and design (1990-1991); and as designer I and II/drafter I and II (1978-1990). He received his master's (1997) and bachelor's (1977) degrees from Texas A&M.
The vice president of administrative services (VPAS) reports to the president and serves as the treasurer to the Board of Trustees and as the University's chief administrative, business and financial officer. The VPAS is the spokesperson and liaison on financial matters to various state and federal agencies, and to the many external publics the University serves. The VPAS provides direction and leadership for the delivery of Universitywide services in the areas of Administrative Information Management Systems; Business Services; Document and Publication Services; Human Resources; Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Executive Institute and Media Resource Center; Physical Plant; Public Safety; Purchasing; and Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness. The VPAS also oversees the insurance and state-mandated ethics programs, provides University coordination with contracted legal counsel and serves as administrative liaison to the Council of Administrative Personnel and the Civil Service Employees Council.
