DeWees Named Interim VPAS

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL – Julie DeWees, director of the budget office at Western Illinois University, has been named the interim vice president for administrative services, effective June 30. She replaces Jackie Thompson, who will retire June 29 after 41 years of service. A national search will begin in Fall 2011.
"I would like to thank members of the search committee for their hard work and efforts during the recent search, which did not result in the appointment of a new vice president," said Provost and President-Elect Jack Thomas. "After much deliberation, I believe that given the fiscal situation facing the University, appointing Julie as interim vice president for administrative services will provide consistency within the division and for the University until a permanent replacement is named. Julie is an extremely well-respected member of the Western Illinois University community."
DeWees began her career at Western in March 1986 as an accounting clerk in Human Resources. In January 1993 she joined the budget office as a budget analyst I and was named assistant budget officer in June 1997. She was named to her current position in April 2005.
As budget director, DeWees is responsible for organizing and monitoring the University's $200 million budget. She plans and coordinates Western's annual operating and capital budgets; determines fiscal year appropriated and auxiliary funds allocations; and submits budget-related requests to the WIU Board of Trustees, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Governor's Office of Management and Budget and the Illinois State Legislature.
"Julie brings many years of financial experience to the division, which is especially crucial during these challenging economic times, and I believe she is an outstanding choice for interim," noted retiring WIU President Al Goldfarb. "She has the knowledge and skills to lead the division as the University transitions to a new leadership team."
DeWees, the 2010 Council of Administrative Professionals Employee of the Year, earned her bachelor's (1983) and master's (1991) degrees from Western.
