Art Gallery Opens with Selections From the Permanent Collection
August 29, 2011
MACOMB, IL – The opening exhibition in the Western Illinois University Art Gallery is "Selections from the Permanent Collection: Science, Technology and Art, which is on display through Sept. 22. A public reception is set for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the Art Gallery.
Guest-curated by students in Western's multidisciplinary museum studies degree program, this exhibition features works that in some way reflect the University's 2011-2012 campus theme: Science and Technology: Discover, Innovate, Create. There is a wide range of two and three-dimensional media, including paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and various metals on display.
Curators – graduate students Todd DeDecker (Hillsdale, IL) and Lauren Sciascia (Rock Island, IL), and Summer 2011 alumnae Catherine Litwino (Bettendorf, IA) and Monae Verbeke (Orion, IL) – worked as a team to produce the exhibition and became actively engaged in the various aspects of exhibition development, including overall theme development; art selection; layout and installation; didactics and labeling; educational activities and programming; public relations; and marketing.
"Art and science have worked together since the dawn of human kind. Most of what is created in each field could not have been formed without influences of the other. Artists, scientists and engineers have all developed simultaneously; and due to the advancements in technology, subjects such as chemistry, biology, architecture, engineering and creative development, have grown and evolved to meet the needs of a developing society," according to the curators.
The exhibition includes more than 40 diverse artworks from 31 artists, including an etching and a watercolor (1934) from the New Deal Allocation; serigraph prints by Mexican artists Iseo Noyola and Raquel Huerta; watercolors by former WIU art faculty Bruce Bobick; mixed media collages by late alumnus Warren H. Anderson; lithographs by Paul Wunderlich and Michael Barnes; and WIU Professor Emeritus Fred Jones' serigraph from his Western Illinois Portfolio and a sketchbook from his study at Atelier 17 in Paris (1979).
The Western Illinois University Art Gallery is open free to the public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays and from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays during exhibitions. For more information, call John Graham, gallery curator, at (309) 298-1587, email JR-Graham@wiu.edu, or visit wiu.edu/ArtGallery.
