November 21, 2011
MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NCSC) was presented the Gold Star Award at the 2011 NSCS convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Accepting the award on behalf of Western Illinois was Rachel Thornton, a NSCS national staff representative.
"The members of Western Illinois University's chapter are amazing," Thornton said. "They have gone above and beyond by creating innovative programs and improving existing programs and have provided an exceptional experience for their members. They have truly embraced the ideals of NSCS."
WIU's chapter has helped with many events, including Stuff the Bus, Box City, College Student for a Day, book drives, selling integrity bracelets and bake sales. They held fundraising events for the Japan Relief Fund and for member scholarship funds. Chapter members also tutor Spoon River College students.
Western's NSCS executive board includes: President Kandice Hammer (Woodstock, IL), senior, forensic chemistry major; Vice President Shelby Hawkins (Atlanta, IL), junior, law enforcement and justice administration major; Vice President of Planning and Achieving Collegiate Excellence (PACE) Sherry Tietjen (Woodstock, IL), senior, special education major; Treasurer Ste'Phan Nolla (Hazel Crest, IL), sophomore, engineering technology major; Social Chair Stephanie Louden (Macomb, IL), junior, psychology major; Vice President of Public Relations Kelby Jasmon (Springfield, IL), senior, law enforcement and justice administration major; and Secretary Kelsey Korsmeyer (Littleton, IL), senior, accountancy major.
To receive the Gold Star award, chapters are required to hold an induction ceremony for new members, create a student mentoring program, hold campus-wide events to support NSCS' integrity initiative, create an on-campus membership recruitment campaign and engage a campus office in chapter events.
WIU's chapter has 554 members, with 100 students inducted starting in 2008. In 2009, 137 students were inducted, in 2010, 157 students and in 2011, 160 students joined the chapter.
NSCS chapters can receive one of four star status levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level is determined by the quantity and quality of events a chapter held in the previous year.
NSCS is an honors organization that recognizes and elevates high achievers. To join NSCS, members must be invited and obtain a 3.4 GPA in their freshman or sophomore years.
