MACOMB, IL – Joseph Dorken, a senior at St. Rita High School in Chicago, has been selected for a Western Illinois University Centennial Honors Scholarship, which covers tuition, fees and a residence hall room for four years.

High school students with an ACT score of 28 or higher and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher have the opportunity to qualify for the scholarship.

Dorken said he chose WIU for a variety of reasons, including its beautiful campus and its small class sizes.

"Attending college is important to me because I want to obtain the best education I can to prepare myself for my career," Dorken said. "I believe a good education is the most important step in moving toward my future goals and Western Illinois University is where I see that happening."

One of Dorken's relatives is also a WIU graduate, which he said contributed to his decision.

"He had nothing but positive feedback to give about the environment, which greatly aided in my choice," he said. "The final, deciding factor in my choice to attend Western Illinois University was the stand-out law enforcement program that I plan on pursuing."

Dorken said he was also impressed with the "abundance of degree offerings" WIU had for its size.

"WIU has a variety of programs to help students achieve their intended major and put their major to work in helping them find employment upon graduation," he said.

In high school, Dorken was named an Illinois State Scholar and participated in the marching, symphonic and jazz bands, the volleyball team, chess club/team, the rugby team, and the National Honor Society.

At WIU, Dorken plans to major in law enforcement and justice administration.
After graduation, he plans to either become a Chicago police officer or join the U.S. Marshals Service.
