MACOMB, IL – Applications are being accepted for Western Illinois University's Minority Internship Program (MIP) through March 19.

The one semester, paid internship program is funded by an Illinois Board of Higher Education HECA grant. It allows full-time junior, senior and graduate minority students to combine work and learning experiences.

The program is designed for African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native American and Alaskan native students who are U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents.

A committee of WIU faculty and administrators, led by co-chairpersons Fran Hainline and Alphonso Simpson, Jr. will handle the local application and selection process.

To apply undergraduate students must be a full-time junior or senior with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75. Full-time graduate students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.

Internship opportunities are arranged by the student with the help of their academic advisor or the WIU Office of Career Services. The MIP program does not perform placement services.

Full-time interns are appointed for one academic term and are paid a monthly stipend. Academic credit for enrolling full-time in an approved internship credit course is required during the internship semester.

Previous interns have worked throughout the U.S. and Alaska and at many overseas locations.

"We strive to provide an enhanced experience for the interns who have been selected to represent WIU through the MIP," said Hainline and Simpson. "The financial support and mentoring available is designed to make the internship experience more rewarding for these exceptional students."

Applications for the summer or fall 2012 semesters are available in the WIU African American Studies office Morgan Hall, room 232. An e-mail invitation has been sent to qualified students.

Any student with questions about their qualifications can call (309) 298-1181 or e-mail MIP@wiu.edu. Students on WIU's Quad Cities campus can e-mail Curtis Williams, MIP liaison at cm-williams11@wiu.edu.
