February 6, 2012
MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University production of Eve Ensler's play, "The Vagina Monologues," will be part of the V-Day 2012 campaign on the Macomb campus Feb. 17-19.
The Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18 performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the multipurpose/activity room of Western's Multicultural Center. Sunday's performance begins at 2 p.m.
Advance tickets are $10 for students and $12 for non-students. If the tickets do not sell out in advance, admission at the door will be $12 for students and $14 for non-students. About 200 tickets are available for each performance.
Tickets are on sale at the WIU Women's Center in suite 209 of the Multicultural Center. The cast and crew of "The Vagina Monologues" will also be selling tickets at a table in the University Union Concourse from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Feb. 6, 9, 14 and 15.
For each of the performances doors will open 30 minutes in advance, and a resource table fair will provide informational materials, merchandise and support services for victims, survivors and women and men interested in helping end sexual abuse and domestic violence and violence against women.
All proceeds from the V-Day 2012 event will benefit local, national and international violence prevention efforts and survivor support services. Last year over 5,800 V-Day events were held around the world, raising $5 million.
V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls.
This is the 11th year a performance of "The Vagina Monologues" has been held at WIU. "We've held 'The Vagina Monologues' at WIU since 2001, with the exception of one year (2003), so this is the 11th time we've produced it with packed audiences and nearly sold-out houses every year," said Janine Cavicchia, director of the WIU Women's Center. The local performance is sponsored by the WIU Women's Center and the Feminist Action Alliance.
"I am very excited to be involved with 'The Vagina Monologues' this year," said Kelsey Harrington, the Women's Center graduate assistant who is producing this year's event. "Working with the student cast and crew is the best part of being the producer. We are all really bonding and becoming a great team. These performances will make you laugh, cry, and be moved to help women everywhere."
