Dear WIU Campus Community:

On May 31, the Illinois State Legislature passed a Fiscal Year 2013 state appropriation bill for public universities that will reduce Western's state appropriation by 6.1 percent. If Gov. Pat Quinn signs the FY13 budget as presented, this will mean a reduction of $3.4 million to Western's appropriated budget, from its current $55.5 million to $52.1 million. It remains unseen at this point as to when the funds for the new fiscal year will be released. In addition, we are waiting for FY'12 state reimbursements of approximately $19.1 million.

We must continue to limit spending for immediate and essential operational needs only, and all purchases more than $500 must be submitted for vice presidential approval.

The University will continue to monitor the cash flow and budget situation, and will update the campus community when we receive more information. Our primary goals continue to be to provide affordable academic programs and services to our students and to meet our payroll obligations.

I appreciate your continued support of, and commitment to, Western Illinois University during these very challenging times.

Sincerely,

Jack Thomas
President
