Currens Hall Update: Temporary Chiller Installed [3:30 p.m. 7/1/12]

MACOMB, IL -- Installation of a temporary chiller for Currens Hall on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus was completed June 30. The building will re-open for business Monday, July 2.

Currens Hall faculty and staff, and students, should report to their Currens Hall offices and classrooms.

The building sustained some smoke damage as a result of a minor electrical fire within the main drive on the chiller during the overnight hours of June 28. Repairs will be made to the permanent chiller when the necessary parts are available.

Currens Hall Update: Temporary Chiller Installation [7:15 a.m. 6/29/12]

MACOMB, IL -- Due to excessive temperatures forecasted for the next several days, a temporary chiller for Currens Hall on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus is scheduled to arrive Saturday morning (June 30). WIU Physical Plant personnel are making the required electrical and mechanical connections today (June 29). According to Monte Colley, Physical Plant assistant director, the plan is to have the temporary chiller installed and begin the cooling process by Saturday evening.

On Monday, July 2, Currens Hall faculty and staff, and students, should report to their Currens Hall offices and classrooms. Should the situation change, an update will be posted at wiu.edu and deans' office staff will send a notification.

The building sustained some smoke damage as a result of a minor electrical fire within the main drive on the chiller during the overnight hours of June 28. Repairs will be made to the equipment when the necessary parts are available, Colley added.

Currens Hall Update: Faculty Access [2:20 p.m. 6/28/12]

MACOMB, IL -- Currens Hall faculty and staff can access the building today (June 28) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. to retrieve necessary items.

Access will be available through the south door (facing Horrabin Hall). A police officer from the WIU Office of Public Safety, and Dana Biernbaum, assistant vice president for administrative services, will provide access into the building. Faculty and staff are asked to bring their office keys in order to enter offices.

Currens Hall Update: Offices Relocated [8:50 a.m. 6/28/12]


MACOMB, IL -- College of Arts and Sciences employees who work in Currens Hall on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus should report to Morgan Hall 303 for temporary office assignments. College of Education and Human Services employees who work in Currens should report to their dean's office in Horrabin Hall. Currens Hall was closed today (June 28) as a result of a fire in the mechanical maintenance area in the basement.

The building sustained some smoke damage as a result of a minor electrical fire during the overnight hours. Clean-up and repair efforts are underway. According to Monte Colley, assistant director of the Physical Plant, the main drive on the chiller caught fire. At this time, it is unknown if the fire was caused by an electrical failure or due to overheating.

The University's chiller supplier has been contacted to conduct an inspection of the equipment. Upon completion of the inspection, Physical Plant personnel will determine if a temporary chiller installation is necessary.

Currens Hall Update: Classes Relocated [7:50 a.m. 6/28/12]

MACOMB, IL -- Classes scheduled in Currens Hall on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus have been relocated to Morgan Hall. Currens Hall was closed today (June 28) as a result of a fire in the mechanical maintenance area in the basement.

The building sustained some smoke damage as a result of a minor electrical fire during the overnight hours. Clean-up and repair efforts are underway.

Classes scheduled in Currens Hall have been relocated to:

Chemistry 101 (Kouassi): Morgan Hall 204
Physics 211 (Babu): Morgan Hall 314
Physics 101 (Rabchuk): Morgan Hall 316

These classes will be held at the Morgan Hall locations until further notice.

Currens Hall employees should contact the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office at (309) 298-1828 for alternate work locations. Updates will be posted to wiu.edu.

Fire in Currens: Building Closed [5:15 a.m. 6/28]

MACOMB, IL – Currens Hall on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus sustained some smoke damage as a result of a minor electrical fire overnight, which originated in the mechanical maintenance room in the basement. As a result of the damage, which also affected the building's chiller, Currens Hall will be closed until further notice.

Employees working in Currens Hall should contact their supervisor regarding the location of an alternate work space. Classes are also being moved to alternate locations. Students should contact their professor(s) for classroom locations.

Employees also have the option to use accrued vacation time, compensatory time or approved leave without pay after notifying their supervisor.

According to College of Arts and Sciences Dean Susan Martinelli-Fernandez, the chemicals in the building are secure and the building's ventilation is working. WIU Physical Plant Staff are beginning the cleaning process.
